Essence of Mercy News Blog

Hey hey and thrice hey all!

I've been thinking, discussing, deliberating, and mulling things over for a few weeks and it's time to get things sorted.

Since we're now in two games I need to bolster the guild management, so...I'll get on with it:

New Officers: Hexissa and Beldeamon

For those who don't know Hexissa (aka Hexington Bear) - I’ve got to know Hex very well in the last few months, as some of you may know I hired her to work for me IRL. She is very hard working, has fantastic attention to detail, is very organised, and is not afraid to tell how me how things are. She also has some great ideas, and motivates me to get things done. Hex is not someone to stand for crap from anyone, has a ton of experience in MMO management, and will be a great addition to our posse. She’s currently more a ToR girl, and is online at different times of the day to help with all those exciting officery duties - Welcome Hexington!

And for those of you who don't know Beldeamon (aka Belington B...no that doesn't really work) he was the GM from Manx, a guild we have acquired many members from, and I think it makes a lot of sense for such a large section of our community to have a senior voice. I've spoken to Bel at length, and he's a top chap, old....yup older than me ;) Level-headed, used to dealing with pains in the backside...errr I mean opinionated guildies ;)  and of course loves a bit of tedious officer admin :) He’s also a WoW boy at present, which helps keep things balanced.

But that's not all!

Champion
...the wonder horse? Nope just but Champion of their games - Oh yes!
I want some people that love their game, and only their game. Who are completely foccussed on either WoW or ToR...but not both. I'm appointing Champions to have their fingers on the pulse of their game, perhaps recommending in-game events, advising officers on improvements, and generally shouting about everything WoW and ToR on the website. The sort of people who'll post some news....or oh I dunno..think the other game is rubbish in comparison to theirs :)

But they're not just there to say how great their game is, they are very active members of the guild, they can invite alts, change the guild message of the day, stick their noses into some officery stuff, put up events on the calendar, get an increased bank allowance, and get access to a new forum where they can air their thoughts to the officers.

And who are becoming Champions? For WoW - Carmilita and Razor! Carmi has already proven herself a great Raid Leader, getting the job done with her shouty, spanky ways, which will be expanding into Dragon Soul more in the near future. Razor - he loves WoW...he hates ToR...if he could take Thrall out for a drink, punch Darth Vader, and get away with a quick kiss with Jaina Proudmore, he probably would....no..no he wouldn't of course..though he may ask Carmi to dress up as her.

And who for ToR? I'll let you know later :)

Ambassador
Yup - there's more! The current Grand Vizier title is just for Ex-Officers who've been in the guild a loooooong time. Well it's time to expand that description a little and change the title. GV's are no more, and Ambassadors are born. All current GV's get the title, but I'm opening up this rank to include long standing members, who have clearly shown they enjoy being here and are well loved, members of the guild.

Promotions to Ambassador will be done as and when I see people I think are very long-standing within the guild :) Some I've done already. Please don't be offended if you're not on here....I may have totally forgotten you...it's been a long week :) Nudge me :)

So all that brings me onto the ranks, which I’ve changed my mind about so often, but I’ve come to the decision that Durguzh is always right (he really is :)) So I'm keeping it simple. I was thinking of ToR Ranks and WoW ranks with fancy names...bu you know what, we can all get titles in the games now anyway, so let the ranks be descriptive so we know what they are, without me having to write an Excel spreadsheet on the forum :)

Sooo....

And that, my lovely lot, is that :)

Thanks all for reading, and let this guild and both games continue to grow (which they both are now a very nice rate indeed :)

2012 Update

Sooo...xmas and new year seemed to hang around too long..or rather too short, but we’re all now back getting stuck into our MMOs!

ToR has sparked a lot of interest in many of us, as we knew it would, and the determined amongst us have already reached Level 50 – Gratz!

WoW’ers have been busy and I know Razor and Carmi have managed to keep the Dragon Soul fires burning with the help of some out-of-guilders, keeping their gear levels tip top for a full frontal attack on Deathwing!

In terms of overall growth, we still seem to be increasing in size in WoW and ToR throughout the festive season. Welcome back some very old faces from WoW who’ve crossed over to ToR, and hello to pretty much the entire population of the Isle of Man! :) A big thank you to Zemeeta particularly who’s managed to keep answering and interviewing applicants to both games, whilst the rest of us have been plying ourselves with booze.

So to the future of the guild (as Durguzh reminded me this week – we have indeed ONE guild, yet TWO games). We’re seeing where ToR ends up taking us, some have tried it and are already decided it’s not for them and will be going back to WoW in the main, others are contemplating switching to it completely. Until more of us get to level 50 and we see how long the endgame content lasts...it’s still hard to tell.....

However! There are some changes afoot, which I wanted to try and get in this week, but with one thing and another I ran out of time to do it all properly. But I can tell you there will be some amendments to the ranks, which will involve some promotions in both games, some redistribution of work, recognition of achievements and......good lord I sound like I’m at work...you get the idea :)

Finally, I’m going to update the site with some more tweaks next week, perhaps a new background and theme, but more importantly a shuffle of some of the pages, plus a new way for ALL of you to be able to post quick links to videos, pics, and general stuff you want us to hear about, that’s not quite as daunting as writing a blog post :)

Happy 2012 all – let’s make it a good ‘un!

How To: Raid Signup

Vintharion posted Dec 22, 11

As there seems to be a general feeling that signing up for raids, when we already got 10 signups, is serving little purpose, I will in this post try to outline the current system a little better.

So how exactly do we manage signups for our raids?
First of all, players are confirmed and invited for raids in signup order, and according to which roles and classes are required (generally two tanks, three healers and five DPS - although variations for special circumstances do occur). Of course, this will look different (upsized, mainly) for any 25-man ventures we may have.

Additional signups, beyond the first 10 to be confirmed, are put on standby. Being on standby still gives you a decent chance to be on the actual raid, as one or two among the 10 confirmed participants may, for various reasons, be prevented from attending the raid. With enough additional signups, a second 10-man raid team can be formed - and with a few additional signups even a 25-man raid is possible.

Should a few of the first to sign up, in some way ask to be put on reserve, they almost certainly will if there are more than 10 signups for the appropriate roles to choose from. If you feel you have been raiding a lot at some point, you can put a note on your signup saying "on reserve" to let us know you're willing to step out in order for someone else to have a shot at raiding. In absence of these notifications we may still try to enforce a limited degree of rotation, if we spot any trends with certain people always being among the last signups and therefore never getting to raid.

In short:
  • Players are confirmed for raids in the order they signed up, according to required classes/roles. A raid mostly consists of 2 tanks, 3 healers and 5 DPS.
  • Signups beyond the first 10 are put on standby. This does not mean these people do not get to raid.
  • To be put on reserve, and let someone else have a shot at raiding, simply put a note on your signup.
  • Always keep signing up, even if you think the raid could already be full. An additional 10-man or eventually a full 25-man raid may be formed.

And while we're at it, to get raids organized a little better, help everyone plan their schedules around raiding, and to help World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic go better hand in hand, a couple of additions are to be introduced with the new year as well. So, in 2012, the year of our glorious doom, two things will happen:
  1. Raids are put on the calendar a week in advance, so as to allow better time for players to notice the events and sign up.
  2. Raids with insufficient amount of signups or a setup that will not work (e.g. no tanks, no healers, too few DPS) will be cancelled at 21:00, the evening before the raid.

Happy raiding!

The TOR Effect

Unless you've been living in a cave, you'll notice that a certain other MMO is due out shortly, and in fact many who pre-ordered could be playing live from tomorrow (Tuesday 13th). So what does that mean for EoM? Well you can safely assume that what goes for EoM, actually goes for most guilds in WoW - a large portion of the player base will be checking out TOR, at least to begin with. This means that WoW could look a little empty....

....plus add in the fact that Christmas is just around the corner, and you're even less likely to have enough players to do a decent conga line around Orgrimmar.

However, don't panic! We in the EoM management are committed to the gusild, and if you check out Vin's post HERE you'll see what raids we'll be organising over the festive season.

What happens next is largely down to the success of TOR, and who goes with which MMO, and indeed who plays both :) All I can say is that we're as ready as we can possibly be in our little community. I've been gearing up for this moment, and tried to ensure we all have the opportunity to stay, and play together.

Good luck everyone, a new chapter is upon us....and in the words of Mario - Leeeeetsa go!!!
